The park encompasses the western end of the George Gill Range and is named for the umbrella-like bush that dominates the landscape. Located along the eastern bank of the Todd River in Alice Springs, this botanic garden was founded in the 1950s by Olive Pink, a legendary Australian anthropologist, gardener and activist for aboriginal rights. Visitors to the garden can enjoy over 250 species of the region's plants, as well as interpretive displays, self-guided walks, a picnic area and the Bean Tree Cafe. Open daily, entry by donation. This national park derives its name from its two main attractions - the geological formations of Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) is the world's largest monolith and one of Australia's most recognizable landmarks, while Kata Tjuta (formerly known as the Olgas) refers to a collection of gigantic egg-shaped rocks. The park is a designated World Heritage Area for both its cultural and natural values and is sacred to the Anangu aboriginal people. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is 14 km (9 mi) from Yulara and over 450 km (280 mi) from Alice Springs.
